His Eye is on the Sparrow
The song His Eye is on the Sparrow” is a gospel hymn written by Civilla D. Martin a lyricist and Charles H. Gabriel a composer in 1905. The song has been based on the following verses from the Gospel of Matthew:
Matthew 10:29-31 (NIV)
29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.Matthew 6:26 (NIV)
26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
These verses were the inspiration that led to the creation of this song. Due to the powerful message that the song conveys it has been revived and arranged in different versions. However, there is this one version that touched my heart the most. A beautiful rendition with great harmony was eloquently sung by two beautiful voices. Lauryn Hill & Tanya Blount (from Sister Act 2)
“I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free. His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me”
I can describe this song in one word “moving”. This is truly a beautiful song. Its simplicity warms the heart and fills the soul with God’s love. Its universal message speaks to us regardless of what situation we are in. God treasures the small as much as the great. May this song be a source of strength to the weak, joy to the depressed, hope to the anguished, and peace to the troubled. Let us rest our weary hearts and find comfort in Gods words through this song -you are never alone- Let your soul sing to the freedom of his promise.
